Suffering from jet lag and having been told brunch at the crazy popular Beaufort St Merchant would be a 40 minute wait, we decide to have a wander around this trendy Sunday morning meeting place where everybody looks like they stepped straight out of Melbourne’s Fitzroy to face their Saturday night hangovers as one. Before 10am on a Sunday it’s clear not much happens here but food. As we turn the corner we incidentally stumble on Perth’s answer to vege heaven. Veggie Mama, a juice-bar-come-café, offers a display fridge full of quinoa, salads and patties of every kind and a menu specialising in foods free of gluten, egg and dairy.
As we are here to kill time it’s not appropriate for me to sit down and sample any of the delicious wares and I settle on a sip of watermelon juice from their fresh juice menu. It is hard to control my excitement, especially while the kitsch plastic vegetables taunt me from their vantage point above the fridge. I shall have to make a point of coming here next I am in perth.
